Sundridge Park, Bromley
Sundridge Park Manor is one of the UK’s most elegant hotels. Currently owned by the Cathedral Group (who acquired the hotel in 2005), the stunning grade I listed Manor House is one of the few country houses jointly designed by John Nash and Humphrey Repton. The house and surrounding landscape is an example of one of the key design issues which Nash and Repton tackled whilst in partnership – this was the relation of the house to a valley in which it was to sit. Whilst the extent of Repton’s park, woodland and pleasure ground design remains today, ownership is split with fragmented more intrusive land uses that have diluted and eroded the historic character of the landscape.
Liz Lake Associates was approached by the Cathedral Group to assess the opportunities for landscape restoration through enabling development. This proposal would enable the development of apartments within the Manor House with associated parking and landscape improvements to the building’s gardens and terraces.
Working closely with Debois Landscape Survey Group, Adam Architects and NTR Planning, Liz Lake Associates prepared a Landscape Report on the history of the site, a Trees and Woodland Management Plan and put together a series of drawings for discussion with the Local Planning Authority and English Heritage. Through negotiations with English Heritage and the Local Planning Authority, Liz Lake Associates helped acquire planning permission for the building and landscape proposals and are currently taking the scheme forward with the client.
