Cotton End Primary School, Bedford.
Liz lake Associates worked closely with Lungfish Architects to create a new Forest School to replace an existing primary school. The concept was to introduce a series of classroom buildings within a relaxed, natural environment which would offer children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. A recent Ofsted inspection (February 2017) confirmed this by stating that ‘pupils thrive in the positive and encouraging environment’.
The well considered landscape scheme allows the school to actively encourage outdoor learning and each class has a dedicated session within their timetable, to engage the children in all sorts of activities including den building, campfire activities including toasting marshmallows etc. The landscape scheme also incorporates drainage features and biodiversity enhancements within an integrated landscape scheme.
